One particular trip to Walmart ended with another abandoned shopping cart.
My child was having a meltdown, to the point that I couldn't get him in his carseat. I had to wait in the parking lot for my husband to come help me.
After leaving one of our cars in the parking lot, we headed to the gas station so we had enough gas to get home. While I was filling our van, 2 policemen pulled in and told me they were here to investigate a child abuse call on ME that they had received from the Walmart parking lot!
I shared with them everything that had happened and showed them the bite mark on my arm and my bent up glasses. I also told them to check over my son, who had no marks. They said they understood but had to follow up on the call.
During this time in our lives, we had firsthand experiences with not only the meltdowns and sensory issues, but also in dealing with a child who had many sleep issues and, at the beginning, no words that we could understand.
When you’re not able to communicate to know your child’s needs, everything is at least 10 times harder.
Our school was not ready with ideas to help either, so we’ve done years of advocating for our son.
There were also many food challenges and power struggles with food. Our first goal was to find ANY foods he would eat, then very slowly working to make his diet healthy.
